Cheerleader Constitution

2008-2009

 

 

I.          Purpose

 

A.     It shall be the purpose of the Enterprise High School Cheerleaders to promote and uphold spirit for the school and our community, to exhibit good sportsmanship through examples and to support good relations in the community and between teams and squads during events.  The organizational goal is to work in harmony with the athletic teams, administration, and faculty.

 

 

II.         Membership

              A. Varsity Cheerleaders

 

i.          Varsity Cheerleaders will consist of female sophomores, juniors, and/or seniors.

 

ii.         Varsity Cheerleaders must be able to perform a standing back handspring without a spot.

 

iii.        Varsity Cheerleaders will cheer at all football games during the regular season as well as state play-off games.  (This may include holidays.)

 

iv.        Varsity Cheerleaders will cheer at basketball games as determined by the coach.

 

v.         Varsity Cheerleaders will be required to cheer during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

 

vi.        Varsity cheerleaders will be required to practice during the summer as determined by the coach.

 

vii.       Varsity cheerleaders will abide by all rules set forth in the cheerleading constitution and NFHS Spirit rules book.

              B.  Junior Varsity Cheerleaders

 

i.          Junior Varsity Cheerleaders will consist of female sophomores and juniors only.

 

ii.         Junior Varsity Cheerleaders must be able to perform a standing backhandspring without a spot.

 

iii.        Junior Varsity Cheerleaders will cheer at all home Varsity football games.

 

iv.        Junior Varsity Cheerleaders will cheer at JV football games as determined by the coach.

 

v.         Junior Varsity Cheerleaders will cheer at basketball games as determined by the coach.

 

vi.        Junior Varsity Cheerleaders will be required to cheer during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

 

 

vii.       Junior Varsity cheerleaders will be required to practice during the summer as determined by the coach.

 

viii.      Junior Varsity cheerleaders will abide by all rules set forth in the cheerleading constitution and NFHS Spirit rules book.

 

 

             C. Stuntmen

 

i.          Stuntmen will consist of male sophomores, juniors, and/ or seniors.

 

ii.         Stuntmen will abide by all rules set forth in the cheerleading constitution and NFHS Spirit rules book.

 

iii.        Stuntmen do not have to tumble, but it is highly recommended.

 

iv.        Stuntmen must cheer at all football games during the regular season as well as state play-off games.  (This may include holidays.)

 

v.         Stuntmen will cheer at basketball games as determined by the coach.

 

vi.        Stuntmen will be required to cheer during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

 

vii.       Stuntmen will be required to practice during the summer as determined by the coach.

 

 

              D. Mascots

 

i.          Mascots will abide by all rules set forth in the cheerleading constitution and the NFHS Spirit rules book.

 

ii.         Mascots will participate at all Varsity football games during the regular season as well as state play-off games.  (This may include holidays.)

 

iii.        Mascots will cheer at basketball games as determined by the coach.

 

 

III.         Team Requirements

 

A.        Cheerleaders must abide by all of Enterprise City Schools handbook rules and guidelines.

 

B.        Each cheerleader will exercise good sportsmanship.  They will not display anger, argue, or participate in derogatory cheers during the game.

 

C.        Each member will wear all assigned clothing to all pep rallies, community events, and ballgames.

 

D.        All cheerleaders will cheer during games and participate during half time.

 

E.        If employed, each cheerleader must work out a schedule with the employer.  Work is not an excused absence.

 

F.         Each cheerleader must clear all financial obligations by the date set by the coach.  A cheerleader will not be allowed to participate until these obligations are cleared.

 

G.        A cheerleader may not participate in any other varsity sport that interferes with the cheerleading season.

 

H.        Each cheerleader must attend a summer camp, which will be selected by the coach.

 

I.          All cheerleaders must take Cheerleading during 1st semester.

 

 

IV.       Attendance & Practices

 

A.        The cheerleading class block is considered practice time.  Routine medical check ups are not to be scheduled during the block set aside for cheerleading or during practice times.  All appointments should be scheduled at non-practice times.

 

B.        Practice times will be determined by the coach.  Cheerleaders should be prepared to practice everyday in addition to the cheerleading class block.  The coach reserves the right to add practices as needed.

 

C.        All squad members must wear navy blue shorts, white shirts, and cheerleading shoes to every practice.  Shorts may not be rolled.

 

D.        Work is not considered an excuse for missing any activity.

 

E.        Cheerleaders may not participate in band or any other activity that will conflict with the cheerleading class block during 1st semester.

 

F.         Cheerleaders or their parents are responsible for transportation to and from practice.  Not having a ride is not an excuse for missing practices or games.  Please be prompt in picking up a cheerleader after practices and performances.

 

G.        Please see Section IX for consequences.

 

 

V.        Uniforms

 

A.        Performance uniforms will be provided through team fundraising and  will be the property of the school.

 

B.        All uniforms needing alterations should be ready in time for camp.

 

C.        Uniforms will be uniform in length and decided on by the coach.

 

D.        No alterations may be made to the uniforms without the permission of the coach.

 

E.        The cost of alterations are the responsibility of the cheerleader.

 

F.         All cheerleader clothing/shoes/equipment ordered through the school must be paid for by the date set by the coach.  If not, the cheerleader will be unable to cheer until the financial obligation is met.

 

G.        Uniforms or any part of any uniform are only to be worn on game days and during games, unless permission is granted by the coach.

 

H.        Uniforms should only be worn by the member they are issued to. No one else should be in your uniform and you should not lend them out.

 

I.          A uniform rental fee of $200 is charged for all squad members.

 

 

VI.       Captain & Co-Captain Duties

 

A.        Varsity and Junior Varsity captains will be chosen by the coach.

 

B.        There will be no rotation of captains.

 

D.        They should be at practice in a timely manner.

 

E.        They should assist in setting cheers and chants to be used at games and events.

 

F.         They should act as peacemakers.

 

G.        They should be responsible for welcoming visiting squads and setting a good example of friendliness to other cheerleaders.

 

H.        They should work to show no partiality within the squad.

 

I.          In the event the captain can not perform these duties, the coach will choose a cheerleader to do so.

 

 

VII.       Squad Duties

                         A.  General

 

i.          Cheerleaders must attend all classes on the day of a game. He/she will not cheer if they are absent from school that day unless excused by the coach.

 

ii.         Cheerleaders are required to wear the correct uniform, socks, shoes and ribbon.  They should not have long nails.  Hair must be in a high pony tail with no stray hairs – NO EXCEPTIONS!

 

iii.        A cheerleader should not eat during a ball game or during the quarter break of a ball game.  They may eat at half time only with permission from the coach.

 

iv.        Cheerleaders are responsible for transportation to and from home games.

 

v.         Cheerleaders travel as a squad to all away games.  If a cheerleader must ride back with a parent, the coach must have written permission from a parent.  This note must be turned in by the time set by the coach.  When the cheerleader is released, he/she will only be released to his/her parent.

 

vi.        Cheerleaders in uniform will not sit in the stands with friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc. during a ball game, between quarters, or between games.

 

vii.       Cheerleading is a busy sport and requires cheering during many holidays and other school functions.  A cheerleader should not ask to be excused.  You are a cheerleader and should attend all games, not only in support of your school, but in order to support your squad as well.  All members are very important to the squad.

 

 

                         B. Pep Rallies

 

i.          All cheerleaders are required to participate in football and basketball pep rallies.

 

ii.         If a cheerleader does not participate in practice the day the pep rally is practiced, he/she will not be able to cheer during the pep rally.  They must still be present and dressed appropriately.

 

 

                         C. Football Games

 

i.          The Varsity cheerleaders will cheer at all Varsity football games.

 

ii.         The Junior Varsity cheerleaders will cheer at all home Varsity football games.  There will be times when the Junior Varsity will have other duties to perform at home Varsity football games before they begin cheering. 

 

iii.        Junior Varsity cheerleaders will cheer at Junior Varsity football games as determined by the coach.

 

iv.        Cheerleaders may not leave until dismissed by the coach.

 

 

                         D.  Basketball Games

 

i.          The Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders will cheer at basketball games as determined by the coach.

 

 

                         E.  Decorations

 

i.          Signs will be painted during the summer.  They are to be neat with no rough edges.

 

ii.         Decorations will be put up on game day.  They will be taken down after the ballgame.

 

iii.        All signs will be stored by the coach. 

 

iv.        No one will leave until all decorations are taken down after the game.

 

 

VII.       Grades

 

A.        The coach will check every cheerleader’s grades periodically.

 

B.        The coach will check every cheerleader’s grades on the day of progress reports and report cards.

 

C.        Each cheerleader must maintain a “C” average in every subject.

 

D.        No cheerleader can remain on the squad with an “F” average for the nine weeks in any subject.  They will be dismissed from the squad for the remainder of the cheerleading season.

 

E.        Should a cheerleader have a “D” on their report card, he/she will be placed on probation for one nine weeks period.  If that grade or any other grade is a “D” on the next report card, he/she will be placed on strict probation which includes mandatory study halls to be determined by the coach.  In the next reporting period, if that grade or any other grade is a “D”, he/she will be dismissed from the squad for the remainder of the cheerleading season.

 

F.         If a cheerleader is dismissed from the squad due to grades, this cheerleader may try out for the next cheerleading season if she meets the requirements.

 

G.        Laps for grades for each grading period:

 

                        i.          “C” – 5 laps

                        ii.         “D” - 10 laps

 

 

IX.       Causes and Consequences for Discipline

 

A.        The coach and principal have the option of issuing discipline and/or removing a cheerleader from a game, pep rally, or both.

 

B.        Points or laps will be used as a disciplinary tool.

 

C.        Points and/or laps will be given by the coach.

 

D.        Fifteen points will result in being benched for two weeks.

 

            i.  “Benching” means not performing in any team function for 2 weeks.  Attendance to the team function is still mandatory.

 

E.        Twenty five points will result in dismissal from the squad.

 

F.         Causes for Discipline and Consequences

 

            i.  A cheerleader will not indulge in drugs, tobacco products, or alcoholic beverages while representing Enterprise High School in uniform or while on campus.  This rule is not limited to being “in uniform”.  This also includes participating in official trips while representing Enterprise High School, either as a bystander or a participant.  This will result in immediate dismissal.

 

            ii.  Any cheerleader displaying defiant behavior toward the coach or other faculty member will be dealt with by the coach and/or principal.  Discipline can range from points to dismissal from the squad.

 

            iii.  Any cheerleader caught cheating on an exam will be dealt with by the coach and/or principal.  Discipline can range from points to dismissal from the squad.

 

            iv.  A cheerleader may not have more than 2 office referrals because of discipline.  Each discipline referral will result in 2 points or 20 laps.  The 3rd referral will result in dismissal from the squad.

 

            v.  A cheerleader will not use his/her cell phone during a ballgame. If he/she must use their phone, they must gain permission from the coach and then go to a place designated by the coach to make the call.  If a cheerleader violates this rule, the phone will be taken up until the end of the last game and then given back at the coach’s discretion.  Also, this offense will result in 1 point or 10 laps.

 

            vi.  Any cheerleader not displaying good sportsmanship will be issued 2 points or 20 laps.

 

            vii.  Any cheerleader eating during football or basketball games at any time other than the time designated by the coach will be issued 1 point or 10 laps.

 

            viii.  Any cheerleader not dressed correctly (uniform, crop top, bow, shoes) for any activity will be issued 1 point or 10 laps.  They will also not be allowed to participate until they are dressed correctly.

 

            ix.  Any cheerleader whose personal appearance is not appropriate (fingernails, nail polish, jewelry, chewing gum) will receive 1 point or 10 laps.  They will also not be allowed to participate until this is corrected.

 

            x.  An unexcused absence from practice (including class block) will receive 1.5 points or 15 laps.

 

            xi.  An excused absence from practice (including class block) will receive 5 laps.

 

            xii.  An unexcused tardy or departure for practice will result in .5 points or 5 laps.

 

            xiii.  An excused tardy or departure for practice will result in 2 laps.

 

            xiv.  An unexcused absence from a pep rally will receive 2 points or 20 laps.

 

            xv.  An excused absence from a pep rally will receive 7 laps.

 

            xvi.  Any cheerleader with an unexcused tardy to a ballgame will receive .5 points or 5 laps.  A tardy of 15 minutes or more will result in sitting out the 1st quarter of the game and .5 points or 5 laps.

 

            xvii.  Any cheerleader with an excused tardy to a ballgame will receive 2 laps.  A tardy of 15 minutes or more will result in sitting out the 1st quarter of the game and 2 laps.

 

            xviii.  Any cheerleader with an unexcused absence from a game will receive 3 points or 30 laps.

 

            xix.  Any cheerleader with an excused absence from a game will receive 10 laps.

 

            xx.  Miscellaneous types of improper conduct can constitute anywhere from 1-25 points.

 

 

X.        Camp

 

A.        All cheerleaders will be required to attend camp.  Cheerleaders are responsible for this financial obligation.  Fundraisers will be available to help offset this cost.  The difference will be assessed to the individual cheerleader.  The school will not be responsible for providing any money for camp.

 

B.        Cheerleaders will purchase matching outfits to wear to camp. Camp clothes will be chosen by the coach.  The financial aspect is the responsibility of the cheerleader.

 

C.        Cheer camp is usually held during the month of June.  The coach will supply the date as soon as possible.

 

D.        The cost of camp is approximately $300.

 

 

XI.       Competition Squad

 

A.        This squad will be made up of Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders chosen by the coach based on ability, attitude, and work ethic.

 

B.        Practice times will be scheduled by the coach.

 

C.        While it is not a requirement for each competition cheerleader to be in a gymnastics class, it is strongly advised.

 

D.        There will be fundraising to raise money for competition fees and travel expenses.  Any fees not covered by this fundraising money are the responsibility of the individual cheerleader.

 

E.        Competition cheerleaders will be required to cheer during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

 

F.         Each competition cheerleader will also adhere to the grade policy for Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders.

 

G.        All causes for discipline and consequences for discipline still apply.
